What Our Participants Say
The Opioid Epidemic: An Update and Review of the Role of Dentistry
“Dr. Omar Abubaker is an extraordinary brilliant and genius OMFS. I have the highest respect for him and have thoroughly enjoyed his outstanding presentation today. I was brought to tears at many times and literally prayed during the lecture for all people who are victims of this epidemic and for the repose of the souls … well I could go on from a religious standpoint. However, academically, this was the greatest presentation I have ever heard on the subject of Opiates - The Epidemic and a hopeful future….and all of the discussions and topics covered were gratefully received. We all play a part in resolving this crisis.
Outstanding from every measure of a great lecture - continuing education course.
Thank you for allowing this incredible opportunity to attend. I am also so overjoyed to hear of the scholarships which Dr. Abubaker has developed.”
“Dr. Abubaker had real life experience with the impact of opioids on our society through the loss of his son. His story and statistics just seemed more genuine than it otherwise could have been. ”
“Good up to date information. It is good to challenge the Medical/Dental community to ensure that we are recommending and delivering best possible care. ”
“The overall passion behind the course subject”
“The connection to real life experiences. Valuable guide from VCU department”
Local Anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide
“Everyone was very assuring and friendly. Patrice was very welcoming and made sure we were taken care of. After speaking to Patrice via phone I knew this was the school I wanted to go to for my LA certification. Very accommodating. Thank you Patrice, you are amazing!!”
“Dr. Strauss is an awesome lecturer and very captivating with his style of teaching.”
“Dr. DeLuke and Dr. Renapurkar were very precise in teaching this course. The materials covered during the didactic portion was thorough and efficiently presented. The instructions given during the practical portion was just what I needed to effectively administer LA.”
“My colleague and I were very glad to have Dr. Renapurkar coaching us through the practical portion. His experience, advice and guidance gave us confidence, and in turn made the practical exercise better than expected. Thank you.”
“Dr. Carter was very thorough in going over each section of the handout. She even implemented some humor here and there which I appreciated.”
“She's clearly very knowledgeable in her field and made it simple for everyone to understand what we were going over.”

CE Requirements to Renew a Virginia Tradesman License
It’s not enough to just get your Virginia tradesman license. Even after you accrue the required experience, submit your license application, and pass the exam, you still need to keep working with the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) to maintain your license.
Specifically, that means renewing your license on a regular basis. Electricians, gas fitters, HVAC tradesmen, and plumbers need to renew every three years . All other tradesmen need to renew every two years .
Luckily, renewing your tradesman license is pretty easy (check out our guide here). It basically just means submitting a form and paying the renewal fee. But there’s one key thing all Virginia tradesmen need to do before they can renew: take continuing education.
So, yes, Virginia tradesmen need continuing education if they have an active license. But the number of hours you need depends entirely on the license type you have. And the DPOR website isn’t overly forthcoming about the number of hours you need.
Continuing education requirements for plumbers, HVAC workers, and electricians
State code mandates that during each renewal cycle, you need three hours of continuing education. Count yourself lucky. Some states require 30 hours or more for renewal, so a few hours isn’t so bad.
To make your life easy, you can take your continuing education online. Here are links to DPOR-approved courses that meet the three-hour requirement and focus on your specific trade:
- Electricians: 3 hours
- Plumbers: 3 hours
- HVAC technicians: 3 hours
Continuing education requirements for gas fitters
Whether you’re a liquefied petroleum gas fitter or a natural gas fitter, you’ve got it the easiest of anyone. You need just one hour of continuing education during each renewal cycle, and you can take it online.
Continuing education requirements for other tradesmen
If you have a tradesman license but you’re not in any of the above categories, it’s fairly safe to assume that you need eight hours of continuing education. That means the following license types need a full workday’s worth of continuing education:
- Elevator mechanics
- Accessibility mechanics
- Water well systems providers
- Automatic fire sprinkler inspectors
General continuing education requirements
The required hours we outlined above are true whether you have a master or journeyman license.
Tradesmen can’t just pop into any classroom for the hours they need. The DPOR requires you to take your continuing education with a provider they approve.
What’s more, your hours need to relate to the applicable building code. Here’s a quick list of the code your hours should hit based on your license type:
- Electricians : National Electrical Code
- Plumbers : International Plumbing Code
- HVAC workers : International Mechanical Code
- Gas fitters : International Fuel Gas Code
- Elevator mechanics and accessibility mechanics : Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code
- Water well systems providers : Unspecified
- Automatic fire sprinkler inspectors : Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code
Assuming you choose a provider who has the DPOR’s green light and you take hours that are relevant to your trade, you shouldn’t have any trouble meeting the Virginia tradesman continuing education requirements.
State of Virginia Tradesman License Renewal Dealine
- Licensees must renew their license by the last date of the issuance month, every two or three years.

Why Customer's Love VESi!
I found the course material to be informative and look forward to applying what I have learned in my current teaching position
I was engaged and inspired by this course. I have learned a great deal and will begin using my new learning the first day of school. Thank you for the experience!
I was very pleased with the information presented in the course and found it to be very beneficial; the knowledge I acquired from the course will help me to better serve students I provide academic/personal/social support services to in my current profession.
Thank you for an amazing class; you truly have inspired me to be a better person and counselor!!!
VESi is unlike other online courses I've taken because 1) it was easy for me to do on my own time schedule AND 2) it included relevant, applicable information. Other online courses I've taken included one or the other, but not both of these aspects of meaningful learning that works with my real life.
Great class. Looking forward to starting the new school year with a new attitude and a new outlook on approaching and preparing my classes to help all learners.
I have taken three VESi courses now. This course was by far my favorite. It was very relatable to my current teaching situation, as I am a fifth grade teacher in an inner-city school. The information in the course was relevant, interesting, and impacting.
